Reaction and Steam?
To rehash some of my comments in a previous news post:

We resigned ourselves long ago to not being a hugely popular mod. We had a good run and we're proud of that. Several people have moved on but we have enough people left, I believe, to finish things up. We've not stopped work due to lack of attention. First and foremost, we love the gameplay and do this out of respect for the game and the players. Sure, the online servers aren't too populated right now, but we know people pull out RQ3 from time to time on a LAN and have fun with it!

Someone mentioned Steam. This is something I had been working on for over a year, literally. My first attempts were thwarted because the contact information for "getting your mod onto Steam" was... well, it was wrong. Took literally months to find out who I even talk to--the Steam blokes updated their "knowledge base" entry for that and that's the only way I got the new contact info. Beyond that, Steam reserves the right to tell mods to shove off unless they have a huge playerbase. i.e. they don't want to waste time with a dinky mod that no one will play. Understandable, but the examples they give are like CS and DoD, stuff like that. It's still something I'm pursuing, but I don't know how likely it will be.

I have also made one or two inquiries as to using the physics engine Havok. They announced a while back that they'd be allowing free use for noncommercial software, but when I inquired about using it in a GPL'ed program like ioquake3, I never got any response. Another thing to follow up on, but the problem I think we run into is that unless people see $$$, they tend to write you off and ignore you.

And remember, no matter what, when we're done working on Reaction, we will open the source. Even if we're not done and we abandon the project before a hoped-for final release. Reaction was put together with the intent that it would one day be opensourced. So, we're doing that no matter what.

So what's up with Reaction?
I apologize that it's been a while since the last update! For those still following Reaction, here's a short rundown of what's been going on. We are slowly working towards replacing all the baseq3 content we used for the mod RQ3 so that we can turn it into the standalone game Reaction. This has been progressing slowly but steadily. Right now the main holdup is a new UI/interface. Makro, our coder pal, has been doing a great job but he's also kind of busy with his own job and school and related shenanigans.

A few months ago my main computer kind of melted down so I've been out of IRC for a while now. Literally melted, the capacitors bulged and failed and a voltage regulator blew up. Shot a jet of white smoke out along with a bit of flame. And, unfortunately, took out 4 hard drives. Soon I shall have a new "work" computer up and going again and can hopefully get back in the swing of things.

We have a sound designer from the industry who is currently helping us redo some of the sounds and we thank him very much for that! TTI has been continually working on odds and ends as well in his spare time. Most everyone else is in a holding pattern waiting for the UI to finish.

We're not waitin' forever, though, and will whip something up just to make a release for everyone who's been waiting on us. It's pretty much just the server browser that remains needing to be redone so as to not use id's assets.

The forums are currently not accepting any new users. We get hit with about 30 to 50 new fake users per day. Bots that are getting past our CAPTCHA tests and making accounts to spam ads. So... I'm investigating something to help cut that down and open up registrations again. In the meantime, if you'd like to get an account activated, please email me and I'll manually get you set up.

I'll more regularly update the news from here on out with various bits of information. Sorry for the wait and thanks for your patience, everyone!

A blip on the radar...
Check out the docs on the left side of the website. They are not only working again, but we have a handy tool for server admins wanting to compute some weaponbans in section 7.7.0. Thanks to Baka for the utility! The rest of the docs are updated a bit as well.

Ayup, slow progress, but we're still churning along.

New Screenshot
It's been a long time since we've shown you anything new. Well, the wait is now over! While still very much a work in progress, you can see where much of our time has been spent these last years. Hopefully we will be able to provide the kind of gaming experience unsurpassed by any other game on the market.

Current target platforms include dual-core minimum system, 1 GB of RAM, and a x1900 or 7900 class video card, crossfire/SLI recommended. We're still working out the kinks on the PS3 platform but we're pleased with the current possibilities of the Cell architecture.

Without further ado, here's a screenshot of a current alpha build:

We truly aim to be by far the best game ever!

What gaming news sites do you read?
I'm kind of curious. Is it the usual suspects, ve3d.com and bluesnews.com? Or are there others that an old codger like me wouldn't be hip to?

Lemme know in the comments!

Kids these days... back in my day you had a 1200 baud modem and you LIKED it!

RQ3 is dead. Long live Reaction!
Reaction Quake 3 is dead as a name. Now it's just "Reaction". No Quake 3 there. Odd that we'd make a news post specifically about that, isn't it?

But then again, what's in a name?
